“Wherever your paths take you, make the arts a meaningful part of your life in some way.  Honestly, they are food for the soul, they revitalize us, they transport us, inspire us, shape us, humble us.  They connect us worldwide in ways that nothing else can.  They are the best common denominator for the proliferation of good in this world, and they are the mirror with which we can view humanity and all its complexities.”

open-the-cages:

It is a common misconception that “free-range” means cruelty free. This is mainly thanks to advertisements showing hens running around large open fields and laying “happy eggs”.
The truth is that in order to be free-range, they must not live in small battery-hen cages. However they still have no room to move. A barn door might be left open to allow for fresher air but the reality is that so many bodies are packed together the majority never reach the door.

Can you spot the difference?
“Free-Range” Hen
• Debeaked with a hot bloody blade at one day old with no anesthetic.
• Force molted (intentionally starved to shock the body into another laying cycle).
• Violently packed into a semi and trucked hundreds of miles to an agonizing slaughter when considered “spent” (unable to keep laying eggs at a fast enough pace).
• Denied the opportunity to live a natural life in truly humane care.
• All of her brothers (roosters) are brutally killed as baby chicks simply because they can’t lay eggs.

A gay’s apology for Christchurch earthquake

In the wake of the terrible tragedy that befell Christchurch, New Zealand, which left upwards of 160 people dead and potentially millions of dollars in property damage, many people were seeking answers to how such a tragic accident could have happened, and how events like these may be avoided in the future.

It was brought to my attention through Internet news aggregates like reddit.com that some New Zealand Evangelicals (notably those at chirstchurchquake.net - a website which has since been taken down) were pertinently placing the blame of the natural disaster on worldwide homsexuality.

As I am (as of late) an un-closeted gay male, I must appologize profusely to New Zealanders for the part I had to play in this fiasco.

When I stepped out or the closet for the first time early last month, I had no way of knowing that this would make me casually accountable for natural disasters along Pacific Rim fault lines - my Grade 9 geography teacher would be so proud!

I had no formal warning that being openly gay would grant me the superpower to summon earthquakes at the mere thought of other men, and I must have forgotten that homosexuality is the remaining Old Testament law that God still cares to enforce .

Now that I know that gayness is directly proportional to one’s ability to control nature, I may just decide to put on a tutu and go join the X-Men.

So I would like to thank the Evangelival Christians of New Zealand and Utah (the state from which christchurchquake.net was initially hosted) for alerting me to the fact that being gay gives me unbridled dominion over plate tectonics, causality and the precision art of seismography.

With great gayness comes great responsibility
